The landing zones for Operation Market Garden were widely spread. Many allied paratroops missed their targets, and found themselves lost in unfamiliar territory. Most landed inside the Netherlands, but others landed on the 'wrong' side of the German border. The parachute landings could not only be seen from the Dutch side of the border; the German population were also in a state of alarm. The streets in German Kranenburg were full of people watching the parachutes over Arnhem and Nijmegen. Some of the paratroops who landed in the enemy's own territory were taken prisoner immediately they landed. Others were not so fortunate.
