Group Captain Richard Llewellyn Roger Atcherley (better known as Batchy), was at the time of this incident OC at RAF Kenley in Surrey. He baled out as his Spitfire went down, was rescued, and lived to tell the tale (and many other stories besides) - he did not die as a result of this Spitfire being downed. I have written about this incident on my Atcherley family history website at atcherley.org.uk
