The liberation of this area by the American 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 504th Parachute Infantry, and a battalion of Brigadier-General Sosabowski's Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade.
On September 17 and 18, 1944, supply drops took place over Overasselt for General James M. Gavin's units (the headquarters of the 82nd Airborne Division). These supply drops took place in the context of Operation Market Garden. The materials dropped could be identified by the colour of the parachute.
