The Battalion command post was set up within the town with a rear command post an reserve on the high ground to the south of the town. A determined counter attack was launched by the enemy on the northwest section of the city but was driven off after hard fighting and with the help of the tank destroyers which had arrived to help stem the tank attack in the nick of time. At least four Nazi tanks were personally accounted for by the 99th before the TDs arrived.
