On 1944-06-23, Pilot M K Michalkiewicz (Flight Sergeant, PAF) with servicenumber P-784123 flew a Mustang II with serial FB196 UZ-Q for this duty: unknown operation. His mission was not completed. Circumstances of the aircraft loss: The squadron met fierce opposition from the Luftwaffe over Dreaux with several combats taking place. The Squadron leader Janus Marciniak was shot down in Mustang FX970 UZ-C and killed. Fl.Lt, Tomanek, Fl/Lt. Budrewicz were also shot down, taken P.o.W. Fl/Lt Potocki was also hit but managed to crash land at an lied emergency strip in Normandy returning to his unit later that day, taking a lift from, France in a light aircraft. (his Mustang was destroyed) Three other 306 Squadron aircraft suffered Cat B. date on this operation. This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 306. The location for the map is Dreaux, France. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Michalkiewicz: he died, but circumstances of death are unknown. There is no commemoration location known.
James Jessett: Flight Sgt Michalkiewicz survived this crash and was picked up by the French resistance with another pilot. Both managed to get back to England and returned to operations.
