On 1940-05-17, Pilot J S Southwell (Pilot Officer, RAF) with an unknown servicenumber, flew a Hurricane I with serial N2501 for this duty: Patrol. His mission was not completed. Circumstances of the aircraft loss: In early 1941 Southwell was with 274 Squadron in the Western Desert. On 17th March 1941 a flight of the squadron was detached to Malta to reinforce 261 Squadron. On 22nd March eight Hurricanes of 261 took off to meet ten Ju88's approaching Grand Harbour with a Me109 escort. In the ensuing engagement, five of the Hurricanes were shot down, including V7799 flown by Southwell. All five pilots were lost. Southwell is buried in Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta. Crashed near Pottignies. This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 245. The location for the map is Grand Harbour Valetta Malta. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Southwell: he was safe. There is no commemoration location known.
