Thursday, June 4th

1000 H        Omaha Beach – Green Dog Sector, Vierville Arrival for first ceremony with MG Grant Hayden and WWII Veterans of 29th ID.  Speeches in front of the National Guard Monument. 
1130 H        Ceremony at First CEMETERY MARKER – located on DOG RED OMAHA. Wreath laying by MG HAYDEN and Veteran. 
1700 H        Private wreath laying ceremony for 29th Division at American Cemetery at Colleville.  MG Grant HAYDEN, Speaker, Chaplain from 29th Division.  
1730 H        29th DIVISION SOLDIERS assist in lowering American flags.  

Friday, June 5th 
 
1115 H        Grandcamp – Maisy Meet at Monument for MOH Frank Peregory.  Ceremony at  Peregory Monument.  Speech by MG HAYDEN and BG KOPER.  
1515 H        Isigny. Meet Mayor of Isigny at Chuch in ISIGNY under plaque dedicated to 175th Regiment of the 29th ID.  Color Guard, Wreath Laying and Taps.  Visit to church and stained glass window with 29th insignia.  Speech by MG Hayden.
1730 H        Omaha Beach and National Guard Monument. (Dog Green sector in Vierville sur Mer). Dedication at National Guard Monument.  Greet Mayor Oxeant of Vierville and BG Koper and .  Flag ceremony with 29th ID soldiers, raising new flags.  Speech by veteran Hal Baumgarten and Jimmy Green of R.N. and President of National Guard Association.  

Saturday, June 6th

0945 H        Ceremonies at St Laurent-sur-Mer.  Signal Monument with all three beachhead mayors and French officials.  Wreath laying by Mayors, MG Grant, 1st and 29th ID veterans and taps.   
1500 H        American Cemetery at Colleville Ceremony.
1830H        Ceremonie at 29th ID Monument in Vierville-sur-Mer, Mayor Oxeant, Color Guard, Wreath Laying and Taps.  Speakers: MGeneral Hayden, Governor O’Malley of Maryland
2100 H        Band concert in St Lo. Music written to honor the events of 6/6/44 landings on Omaha Beach Dog Green and 29th Infantry Division. Also the music composed by Fred Vogels, Killing Fields will be played by the Holland Legion Band and Director Thom Working

Sunday, June 7th  
1200 H        Ceremony to unveil New Monument dedicated to the 175th Infantry Regiment who received Presidential Unit Citation for actions 16-18 June 44.  Mayor of Villiers Fossard, MG Hayden, Lt Col. Blair, WWII Veteran Steve Melnikoff,   Col. Whiteford’s family to unveil and assist with wreath laying.  
1430 H        Visit Hill 108  and hedgerows and the actual fields and hedgerows with historians who have  studied the battle.

Monday, June 8th

1030 H        Howie Memorial, Ceremony, St. Lo.  Greet Monsier le Maire Digard .  Color Guard, Wreath Laying and Taps.  Visit cemetery and 115th HQ.  Visit Church in St Croix .

Als verhalen ontsporen — het geval Morley Piper

Soms raken verhalen ons diep. Zeker als ze gaan over moed, oorlog, verlies en overleven. Maar wat als zo’n verhaal niet klopt?

Morley Piper, jarenlang gepresenteerd als D-Day-veteraan van de beroemde 29th Infantry Division, sprak op herdenkingen, werd geïnterviewd door kranten, en keerde terug naar Normandië als gast van eer. Hij vertelde hoe hij als jonge pelotonscommandant op Omaha Beach was geland. Zijn verhaal raakte velen.

Maar het bleek niet waar.

In 2018, tijdens een interview in zijn woning in Essex, bood Piper zijn excuses aan. Hij gaf toe dat hij had gelogen over zijn militaire dienst. Hij had inderdaad gediend in het Amerikaanse leger, bij het 459th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, en was betrokken bij de Normandiëcampagne — maar pas ná de landing op D-Day. Hij maakte dus geen deel uit van de divisie die als eerste de stranden bestormde onder zwaar vuur.

Piper verklaarde dat hij in 1994, voor de 50-jarige herdenking van de invasie in Normandië, een ‘toegangsbewijs’ nodig had om aan de ceremonies deel te nemen. Daarom beweerde hij tegenover de organisatie dat hij lid was geweest van de 29th Infantry Division. Toen hij terugkeerde in de VS en mensen hem vroegen te spreken over zijn ervaringen, hield hij die leugen in stand.

“Ik had ermee kunnen stoppen,” zei hij.
“Maar dat deed ik niet. Het liep gewoon uit de hand.”

De ernst van zijn verzonnen verhaal zit niet alleen in het feit dat hij loog, maar vooral in het feit dat hij zich presenteerde als een vertegenwoordiger van mannen die werkelijk door het vuur gingen — velen van wie nooit terugkwamen om hun eigen verhaal te vertellen.

We eren veteranen niet vanwege mooie verhalen, maar vanwege de waarheid die erin schuilt. En de offers die ze werkelijk brachten.

De geschiedenis verdient die eerlijkheid.
Zeker van degenen die beweren haar te belichamen.

Morley Piper:

In an interview at his Essex home Wednesday night, Piper apologized for lying about his military service. He said he served in the Army with the 459th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion and participated in the Normandy invasion but well after the 29th Infantry stormed the beaches and bore the brunt of the German resistance. Piper’s updated account of his military service could not be immediately verified Wednesday night.

Piper said he began lying about his experience when he needed a credential to attend the 50th anniversary of Normandy in 1994. He told organizers he had been a member of the 29th Infantry so that he could participate in the ceremonies, he said.

When he returned to the United States and was asked to speak about his war-time experiences, he began including the misrepresentation that he had been with the 29th Infantry, including in stories that appeared in The Eagle-Tribune.

“I could have shut it off afterward, but I didn’t,” he said. “It kind of spiraled out of control.”
