Description
On 1942-02-17, Pilot R J Emberg (Flight Sergeant, RCAF) with servicenumber R/56105 flew a Hurricane IIb with serial BE471 for this duty: Scramble. His mission was not completed. Circumstances of the aircraft loss: Took off late in the morning on a scramble to assist the attack of destroyers in the Brest area - Squadron reported as some damage done to the fleet. During the return they met with three Luftwaffe Me 109's coming over the channel. Dogfights followed one Me109 went down, remaining two attacked Fl/Sgt Emberg's Hurricane with damage being done to the aircraft. He managed to return to the airfield at Plymouth making a crash landing. The aircraft was repaired (Cat 'B'), Fl/Sgt Emberg suffered no injuries. This aircraft was a part of squadron no. 402. The location for the map is English Channel, United Kingdom. Circumstances at the end of this mission for Emberg: he died, but circumstances of death are unknown. There is no commemoration location known. Later Fl/Lt J/15585 .
